President and Technical Director

Chang-Wei Jen, PE

Mr. Jen has a distinguished career as an entrepreneur with over 35 years’ experience in engineering. In his early career, he joined the pump division of Dresser Industries (now part of Flowserve and Curtiss-Wright Corporations) with responsibilities in new product development, field testing, troubleshooting, vibration and dynamic turbomachinery analysis for all Dresser corporate entities worldwide.

In 1992, Mr. Jen joined Membrex Inc., a former venture start-up company that developed membrane technologies for water and wastewater treatment applications. Membrex was later included in GE’s Water & Process Technologies division through acquisition and integration. At Membrex, Mr. Jen was responsible for research investigation, design and development of novel membrane filtration equipment, employing high shear vortex flow filtration (VFF) from concept to prototype and eventual production. Users of this technology include GM, who utilized VFF at an engine plant to further condense oily wastewater from 30,000 gpd to 200 gpd. While at Membrex, he redesigned the in-house membrane filter cartridge fabrication process and equipment to improve the production rate by 120%.

In 1996, Mr. Jen co-founded Mechanical Solutions, Inc. (MSI), offering an extensive portfolio of engineering services and product solutions for a variety of industries. MSI has accumulated an outstanding record of solving some of the most difficult and challenging technical and engineering problems worldwide for commercial, industrial and government clients. Mr. Jen, as Vice President and Principal Investigator, specialized in microfiltration and ultrafiltration, as well as performing troubleshooting and engineering analysis of process equipment for Utilities and the Petrochemical Industry, adding to his experience with flow machinery and filtration systems, strategic planning and project execution. By 2000, with the successful expansion of MSI, a second company, Filtration Solutions, Inc. was spun-off headed by Mr. Jen.

Mr. Jen’s responsibilities at FSI include filtration system development, company administration and strategic planning. He increased the value of the company from a technical services provider to an equipment/system producer with product lines for fuel and oil purification, water and wastewater treatment. He is a Principal Investigator for U.S. government sponsored Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and other projects with technologies commercialized through SBIRs to include pre-filtration for reverse osmosis, coolant recycling and fuel purification. He also worked as an expert witness providing his expertise in filtration areas in several legal cases.

Mr. Jen has six U.S. patents in filtration related areas and has published 15 papers, which include a 1993 recipient of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) Walter D. Hodson Award for best technical paper published the previous year.

Mr. Jen earned a B.S.M.E. from the National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan) and a M.S.M.E. from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Jen is a registered and licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New Jersey.
